TV has undergone a renaissance of sorts since Y2K, with some truly great series to watch. The rise of “binge watching” has come with streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime, meaning that often the shows you want to watch are available in whole season chunks rather than individual episodes.
Interpersonal strife over what to watch aside, these shows can be binged now, and they’re totally worth it!
Better Call Saul
Yes we’re aware that the second season just wrapped up, but we’re assuming like most millennials you don’t have cable, largely because the hot pockets and PBRs simply aren’t going to buy themselves, and your discretionary budget is for obscure vinyl pressings of bands that are unique but frankly horrible.
The series, which is a spin off of Breaking Bad, follows the checkered career of one of the more crooked characters in the former series, Saul Goodman. Of course, the series takes place before the future Saul, who’s real name is Jimmy McGill, breaks bad himself. The series is surprisingly heartfelt, and at times difficult for the audience since it knows what will eventually happen to poor, misguided Jimmy. With the first season available on Netflix, now would be a good time to catch up.
House of Cards
One of the earlier drama series to take advantage of the binge watching format, the Kevin Spacey starring political drama just released its fourth season last month, proving that vaguely ripping off British TV dramas is still a profitable industry in North America.
The American series’ first season is really the only one that mirrors the UK series, after that it has mostly been its own animal. Even the fourth wall breaking that Francis Underwood does has diminished over the course of the show which is a pity.
Sure, it’s been off of TV for the last 10 years, and sure the infamous ending is pretty well known at this point, but that doesn’t stop this from being six seasons of great drama that you should binge this weekend. The Sopranos is well known for at least two things, great drama and spectacular violence. Also, for being a refugee camp for almost everyone from Goodfellas. So, you know, three things.
